Contrary to other suggestions, I think the Plateau is the best place to stay in Montreal. Very cool/hip, lots of young people, tons of restaurants and bars, and you get the sense of the "real" Montreal, where people actually live and love their city. Old Montreal is beautiful but 100% tourists, Downtown is a bit bland/boring.
