Using a 'non-lethal' weapon increases that range, so it makes the whole thing easier (but its not guaranteed to keep them alive). There are three thing to keep in mind. -Dont hit 'em after the go down. So no button-smashing. You can use your fists, blunt weapons like baseball bats and wrenches.
