JMoe. I haven't seen a Briggs Vanguard series engine used on a lawn/garden tractor in years. The last I know of for sure was on some Cub 2000 series LT/GTs made up until 2004. To the OP, if the Kawi we're talking about is installed on a ~$2000 lawn tractor, I'd keep the $200 and go with the Briggs.

Kawasaki vs vanguard. A couple points-. Kawi makes a good engine, but they don't make an 852cc 31hp. The 31 is the 921v which is 999 cc same as the 35 hp 1000v. The 852 comes in 24.5 (was 27under old inaccurate system), 25.5 (was 29 under old inaccurate system) and 27 hp (which was 31 under old inaccurate system, but hasn't been for three years now).

The Vanguard is $85 less than the Kawasaki so cost is not an issue. Does anyone have any experience with these engines to be able to do a good nut and bolt comparison.They have basically three engine options: Kawasaki FX, Kohler Commands, and Brigg's Vanguard Big Blocks. I was a bit surprised that most knowledgeable people (ZTR service guys and hardcore landscaping crews) are saying that the Kohlers are the best, they have had good but limited experience with the Vanguards, and they rank the Kawasaki last. I physically opened the hood on a YTH26V54; the engine definitely says Professional, does not say Intek. This is why I raised the question about the Kawasaki 26hp FR vs B&S 26hp Professional.
