40 posts · Joined 2002. #1 · Jul 20, 2004. Does anyone know where to find a list of manufacturing dates by serial number for Marlin 336 Cowboy rifles? Both the .38-55 and the .30-30. They probably are in the same block of serial numbers. My .38-55 should be one of the earlier ones since it's drilled and tapped for a side mount receiver sight.

It was the last of the square bolt rifles and a transition into the Model 336. They can be tricky to date because there was a lot of parts sharing in that period. Without doing a little digging I would guess your rifle is from 1938 to '45.
